Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin diseases, affecting 80% of the population. Acne is the term used for blocked pores, and it causes blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, lumps, and nodules that usually occur on the face, back, and shoulders.

Teenagers are usually affected, but age is not a factor; many adults have acne, as well. Acne is a treatable condition, but without proper treatment, it can be devastating and leave permanent scars.

Earlier treatment improves the prognosis of acne. Since many different treatments are available, acne treatment is individualized and varied. Acne scars can be prevented, but if scars do form, they can be improved and minimized by lasersmicrodermabrasionfillersSculptra, and microneedling.

Rosacea

Description

Rosacea is a visible reddening of the skin of the face.  A chronic skin disorder, it typically appears when a person is in their 30s or 40s. Beginning as a persistent flushing in response to stress or exertion, rosacea is progressive, and symptoms often worsen over the course of years.

While many people flush and blush, not everyone has acne rosacea. Rosacea is the combination of that tendency to flush and blush, with a tendency toward acne. It can come up in response to some triggers like spicy food, alcohol, sunlight, and even stress.

Rashes and Allergies

Description

The most common rashes are adverse reactions to medications, ingredients in a lotion or shampoo, metals, or even food.  Some rashes will only go away if treated by a dermatologist. These types of rashes include severe forms of acne, atopic dermatitis, and rosacea. The longer you’ve had a rash, the more important it becomes to see a dermatologist.

While a rash that has been present for only a few days will usually go away on its own, you should visit us if you experience pain, rapid swelling causing shortness of breath, bleeding blisters in the mouth or eyes, skin that is rapidly turning dusky or black, and large amounts of peeling skin.

Warts

Dr. Pennoyer has successfully treated patients for warts and corns. Warts are caused by a virus living in the skin, and most will last about nine months. However, some may persist longer and require professional treatment.

Treatments Available

Over-the-counter (OTC) treatments such as topical salicylic acid products can shrink the warts with regular use. In many cases, these products cause the wart to go away. Please contact the office if the warts resist OTC products.

Many common warts/ corns can be treated by “painting” with Cantharidin by a dermatologist. Cantharidin causes a blister to form under the wart or corn. The dermatologist can then clip away the dead part of the wart or corn on the blister roof in about a week.

Cryotherapy (freezing) is the ideal treatment for adult patients. This treatment is not painful and rarely results in scarring. Several repeated treatments at one to three week intervals may be necessary, depending on the severity of the case.

Electrosurgery and laser treatments are additional alternatives to wart or corn removal, if they do not respond to other kinds of treatments.
