Finasteride is a prescription medication commonly used to treat male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. It works by blocking the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone linked to shrinking hair follicles and progressive thinning.
By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, Finasteride can slow hair loss and, in many cases, stimulate regrowth over time. Most users begin to notice results after three to six months of consistent daily use, with continued improvement possible after one year.
Finasteride is typically most effective for thinning at the crown and mid-scalp rather than a receding hairline. While generally well tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects such as decreased libido or sexual dysfunction. Because results depend on continued treatment, stopping the medication usually leads to renewed hair shedding within several months.
